Client work exploring a mining city set in a desert. Set in a sci-fi world, with old money ripped away from high places in the hierarchy, the population is mainly constituted by miners and tinkerers. One of the key aspects is how this city is able to be energy self-sufficient, with workers dwellings built into holes in the no-longer-used mines. Later they gather down in the hole, where water accumulates due to the drilling and raining.
The process used for this project is a 2D/3D hybrid. Starting 2D to explore the initial idea, going 3D to densely populate the area, explore different compositions and set the lighting and perspective. Then doing a final render and start painting.
